Flight operations will be suspended at Chennai airport from 7pm on Wednesday till 7am on Thursday as a precaution in view of heavy rain caused by cyclone Nivar.
"The decision has been taken considering the safety aspect of passengers and the severity of the approaching cyclone," said a statement from the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Airlines had already cancelled some of the flights that were scheduled in the evening and night. IndiGo had cancelled 24 flights and SpiceJet had cancelled two flights.
