Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Sunday said the U.S. “will continue to assure flow of traffic” through the Strait of Hormuz more than a week after hostilities between the U.S. and Iran resumed.
“The president is always looking for the diplomatic off-ramp,” Wright told ABC News’s Jonathan Karl in an interview on “This Week.” “President Trump wants to end it with a peaceful agreement with Iran, but it takes two parties to do that. If they’re ready to do that, that’s the way it’ll end.”
“If not,” he added, “we will continue to assure flow of traffic through the strait without Iran’s cooperation.”
Karl had Wright face comments he made in March predicting that the Iran war would end in a few weeks or “sooner than that.” Karl then asked, after five months of conflict, how and when it will end.
“We needed four to six weeks for military action. They went for five and a half weeks. We did a pause to try to get an agreement with the Iranian people to allow oil to flow without them attacking it,” Wright said, referring to the now-defunct memorandum of understanding that both countries signed before the fighting resumed. “They’ve proven unwilling to do that, and we’ve pivoted.”
