Vice President, Sustainability
The shipping and transportation sectors are some of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in the world. The importance of sustainable action and initiatives within supply chains cannot be overstated as sustainable supply chains help to minimize the environmental impact of climate change and reduce the carbon footprint of both the provider and customer.
At PSA BDP, we are committed to net zero emissions across our operations as we firmly believe in the importance of sustainable practices and reducing our impact on the climate. PSA International (PSA BDP’s parent company) is a proven leader in sustainability, and set its own targets for Scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2020, with a 2019 baseline. We have also committed to the same target: Reduce absolute Scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, 75% by 2040, and net zero by 2050 against the baseline year 2019.
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) divides emissions into three scopes:
Scope 1 emissions – direct emissions from sources owned by a company
Scope 2 emissions – indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heat, and cooling
Scope 3 emissions – all other emissions associated with a company’s activities
Since 2022, the Sustainability Team at PSA BDP has been measuring and modeling PSA BDP’s carbon emissions across all three Scopes, as defined in the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. The data we have reviewed also extends back to 2019, and with the successful roll-out of an online data system this year, we have now established a firm and prominent platform for tracking progress against meaningful reduction targets.
It is important to remember that using the equity share approach under the GHG protocol, PSA BDP’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions are limited to energy use and other activities from our owned assets and premises. As PSA BDP is primarily a solutions provider with a large portfolio of leased facilities, our Scope 1 and 2 emissions represent only 1% of our overall emissions. Therefore, the majority of our emissions are categorized as Scope 3, which includes emissions from our customers' freight movements.
As the PSA BDP organization makes strides and takes action to improve our Scope 3 measurement and accounting, we also plan to announce specified targets in Scope 3 in the coming months to reinforce our commitment to making a tangible and measurable impact for the organization, our customers, and our planet.
