It should come as no surprise that the trade war between the US and China is in the headlines again, as the saga continues to simmer while changing almost by the day.
The USTR issued a follow-up announcement in response to President Trump’s August 1 update regarding an additional 10 percent tariff on approximately $300 billion worth of Chinese imports, known as Tranche 4.
As mentioned by President Trump, the tariffs would go into effect on September 1. However, certain products have been removed from the initial list on the basis of health, safety, national security, and other factors, and therefore will not face the additional 10 percent increase. Special hearings were held so that industries could voice their concerns about the increased tariffs and what effect it will have on their business and end customers.
Additionally, in conjunction with the USTR’s public comment and hearing process, the tariff will be delayed until December 15 for certain goods, including cell phones, laptop computers, video game consoles, some toys, and certain retail goods like footwear and clothing.
So - what actions should you take now?
Tranche 4 is divided into two lists for your review. The lists contain the HTS number along with a description for your reference.
At this time, we have not been advised what the dates of September 1 and December 15 apply for, whether Date of export or Date of Import.
When the Federal Register publishes this information, we will update accordingly.
