In line with its commitment to helping customers achieve sustainable and transformational supply chains, PSA BDP has introduced electric trucks (e-trucks) into its logistics operations in India. Launched in May 2024, this groundbreaking initiative positions PSA BDP at the forefront of green logistics, becoming the first logistics provider in India to implement heavy duty
e-trucks from port to manufacturing facility. This milestone offers customers a cleaner, more efficient transportation solution while supporting their sustainability goals.

Why It Matters

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and ranks among the top five in truck usage globally. With the second-largest road network, the nation’s logistics sector is ripe for innovation. As India shifts toward alternative fuels -compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), and electricity - PSA BDP saw an opportunity to lead from the front, delivering sustainable, scalable solutions that empower businesses to stay ahead of the curve.

A Game-Changing Partnership

Dow Chemical International Pvt. Ltd. (Dow India) became the first client to join PSA BDP in creating a zero-emissions green transport corridor at Nhava Sheva - a landmark collaboration solidified by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in August 2023.

What makes this partnership revolutionary? It’s not just about cutting emissions - it’s about creating a fully sustainable supply chain ecosystem.

  • Goods arriving at PSA Mumbai, India's first 100% renewable energy-powered container terminal, benefit from a fully sustainable logistics solution.

  • The e-trucks deployed by PSA BDP are charged using renewable energy from PSA Mumbai’s 10 MW Open Access Solar Plant, ensuring a truly green transportation corridor.

  • This integration of renewable energy into the e-truck charging process further differentiates PSA BDP’s offering by providing a complete green solution from well to wheel, significantly reducing the overall carbon footprint of logistics operations.

Beyond Dow India: Expanding Sustainable Logistics to Multiple Sectors

PSA BDP designed and executed a robust implementation strategy that ensured a seamless transition to e-truck operations:

  • Infrastructure Development: Identifying optimal locations and establishing charging stations

  • Strategic Partnerships: Procuring e-trucks and customized trailers

  • Training & Awareness: Educating drivers and operational teams on e-truck handling and safety protocols

  • Customer Engagement: Conducting risk assessments and demonstrating the long-term value of e-trucks

  • Regulatory Approvals: Streamlining vehicle registration and ensuring full compliance with local regulations

While clients were enthusiastic about integrating e-trucks into their supply chains, industry practices posed challenges, particularly regarding priority over ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles and additional costs associated with electric freight transport. The PSA BDP India team worked closely with their partners to navigate obstacles, set new standards, and optimize operational costs, making sustainable logistics both feasible and cost-effective.
